I am not an avid supporter of open source, neither do I belong to the community some how, nor do I favor closed source or the things on the other side of the coin, I am a fervent user of technology and fall in love with it if its great and live up to my expectations, and will hurl it out if its not worth. I have been using these two open source products for the past few months and am more than satisfied, they are simply awesome, today I thought of doing my bit in spreading a word about them, because that’s the way open source spread, and that’s what the user of open source should at least do, so here I am doing my bit to tell you about Wikipedia and Mozilla Firefox. In this post I will talk about Wikipedia which is an open source encyclopedia. In my next post will talk about Mozilla FireFox, a web Browser from Mozzila.

WIKIPEDIA : Wikipedia is an encyclopedia based on open source model with its content being open for reading and editing to its readers, it is based on the same principle as free software and is licensed to public under the GNU free documentation license. Check out more here
To date its available in number of languages including Hindi, Urdu, Tamil, Malayalam etc. with English version being started in 2001 is working on more than 291686 articles. It has grown over a period of time from the articles contributed by people all over the world, anybody can edit the existing articles or start a fresh one, need not register, its as simple as it can be to use, in fact the word wiki itself means quick and is a community in itself.

I visited it once in 2001 and was using it now and then, as next best option after Google but for the past 8 months I have been using it religiously and prefer it to Google and believe me it’s the Best in World Wide Web, its up to date, and articles are disinterested giving equal importance to every point of view. So next time if you are looking for some specific info about anything from art to science to the current affairs to the latest happenings in the computer processors or what is VAT, wikipedia is the right place to start with. As for now you can either visit Community Portal of wikipedia to know more about how to contribute and get involved with the development of wikipedia. Or as a newcomer you can start of with this Welcome Page. If you wish to know about the history and development of Wikipedia, visit this Pageand finally see this is what Wikipedia has to say about India.
