Some Gyaan on Blogs

February 21, 2008

Recently, a friend of mine sent me a list of interesting questions related to various aspects of Blogs, so I spent some time researching and responding to these. Think its worth sharing the same. Hope you find them useful, and feel free to share your knowledge on the same in comments.

    • What does Trackback UI do?

Trackback helps you to notify another author that you wrote something related to what he had written on his blog, even if you don’t have an explicit link to his article. This improves the chances of the other author sitting up and noticing that you gave him credit for something, or that you improved upon something he wrote, or something similar. With pingback and Trackback, blogs are interconnected. Think of them as the equivalents of acknowledgements and references at the end of an academic paper, or a chapter in a textbook.

Trackback is closely related to Pingback

Pingback lets you notify the author of an article if you link to his article (article on a blog, of course). If the links you include in an article you write on a blog lead to a blog which is Pingback-enabled, then the author of that blog gets a notification in the form of a Pingback that you linked to his article. (Note that if you want to receive pings if somebody links to a post from your blog, then you need to enable Pingback in Blog settings page)

For more geeky info check à Pingback technical specification.

Both of these are a part of techniques collectively called Linkback

Linkback is a method for Web authors to obtain notifications when other authors link to one of their documents. This enables authors to keep track of who is linking to, or referring to their articles. The three methods (Refback, Trackback, and Pingback) differ in how they accomplish this task.

      Example

In my last post I referred to THIS POST from Techcrunch. See trackback / ping in screen shot below.

Similarly if I cross link posts on my blog … pingback or trackback appears as a comment in post that was linked … check the comments on this post

Relevance as SEO Technique: These various “backs” are important SEO techniques and we Bloggers use these techniques for promoting and advertising their blog

        • As the blog owner, do you get a notification whenever somebody posts a comment?

Yes, it’s an optional setting which can easily be enabled or disabled from blog settings

          • What’s the hierarchy in a blog (say wordpress) Blog àTopic à Post à Comment?

Yes, there are various ways to help you organize a Blog using categories, Tags etc However I don’t find any rigid hierarchy

              • In one’s blog site (lets say this blog) who can start topic? I believe anybody can leave a comment

Blog admin can control that, it depends on the blog platform and its security settings. In case of word press there are three types of users with that can be defined.

There are various options available for controlling who can comment, you can even bar particular IP addresses from commenting or a mail id … spam is a concern with comments / trackback/ping on blogs wordpress use their service Akismet for controlling spam.

                  • As the blog owner, do you have separate admin screen/rights to manage/control stuff entered?

Yes, as a blog owner I am admin of my blog have full controls to it … After all blog is a personal diary / journal so owner has the full rights to take decisions for his personal diary!!

                      • In wordpress let’s say, everybody has their own interface and design for their own blogs? Does wordpress provide any templates, or the authors can design on their own?

Yes various platforms provide various features Blogger gives you templates and full freedom to edit those templates while word press does give you templates but in free account you cannot change the CSS of those templates you need to upgrade the account for the same
