Melbourne cup=??

November 12, 2008

Yes, this was my reaction when my client asked me, so what are you doing for Melbourne cup. Though he was kind enough to tell me it is a horse race kind of very popular here… Coming back first thing I did was to know more about this cup … and in few minutes I realized that it was not a good thing to be in Australia and not knowing about Melbourne cup … well, but now I know it so it isn’t a bad idea to blog about something as interesting as this cup

So what is Melbourne cup – In simple English it is Australia’s major annual horse race and it is big … big enough that it’s also termed as “The celebration that stops the nation” Event is held on first Tuesday of November at Victoria Racing club on Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne.  If not anything else this event proves the fact that Aussies love their sports and love it so much that it’s Public Holiday in Melbourne, entire state of Victoria and in some other parts of the country. I can’t think of any public holiday dedicated to some sport in India.  Well to know more help yourself with the wiki link or the Melbourne cup carnival web site

Some other Interesting facts about the race

  • First running of the cup happened in 1861 and this year it was 148th Melbourne cup carnival
  • Total prize money to be awarded in 2008 Melbourne cup is AUD5.5 million
  • It covers a distance of 3,200 meters
  • Viewed, Delta Blues, Pop rock, Makybe Diva, Archer, peter pan, Rain lover, Think big … These are the names of the various horses
  • Makybe Diva with 3 race wins is a mare with maximum races won. (Ladies Rule!!)

It’s not just a race

It’s much more than a race; it’s a day when people come to the racecourse in traditional race day wear and other forms of exotic costumes.  Race is synonymous with the fashion and prize is awarded for best-dressed racegoers in Male and female category. Other attraction of the race is Hats; women wear all sorts of exotic hats. Another important aspect of the race is Flowers; Flemington racecourse has about 1200 roses of 200 varieties nurtured by 12 gardeners.

Betting

Another thing I came to know was that betting is legal and a big business here, since the time I landed in Australia I always wondered what this TAB written over at certain shops. Only came to know about it now that it is Tabcorp – Australia’s premier entertainment and gambling group. Each year hundreds of thousands of people who have Melbourne cup bet and most of the money is bet on the Australian TAB.

This year’s Stars

Viewed ridden by Blake Shinn won this year’s Melbourne cup race, it was a thrilling Finish with Bauer just losing it by few inches. With this win Viewed’s trainer Bart Cummings got his 12th win (highest ever with his first win in 1965 by horse called Little Fingers)

No Wonder

This was my first ever exploration about horse races and I found it pretty interesting and engaging … no wonder Melbourne cup is termed as a “celebration that stops the nation”
