Big Vs Small

January 13, 2009

Small is new Big

Recent (mis) developments in Indian IT industry – fall of Satyam and then now Wipro in news for wrong reasons … BIG companies BIG games.  This reminds me of  Seth Godin’s 2005 blog post and book – Small is the new big

….Enron (big) got audited by Andersen (big) and failed (big.) The World Trade Center was a target. TV advertising is collapsing so fast you can hear it……

….Small is the new big because small gives you the flexibility to change the business model when your competition changes theirs…..

Coming months will be very crucial for Indian IT industry, whether it is an opportunity for other players (Big or Small) to bank upon this or it will have adverse effect on Indian vendors … Difficult to say … Good and fast steps have been taken by Government to save the face of Indian IT but everybody is watching it closely

I feel small companies has an opportunity here only if they can showcase their transparency, easy access to top management and personalized approach for clients…. However small doesnt really mean small … you got to think BIG as Seth rightly ends the post

Small is the new big only when the person running the small thinks big.

Don’t wait. Get small. Think big.

Richard Brason on Small is new Big

So how does BIG companies get small? By keep on Doing the things which they use to do when they were small … One way is as suggested by Richard Branson in an interview to Seth Godin . As he says under big Virgin brand there are many small companies and all of these individual companies have only 50-100 employees in a building in a company …

Big Small Quadrant

Some of us love quadrants, so if Size on X axis; Vision/Thinking on Y axis we quickly get four types of companies –

1. Big Size Big Thinking

2. Small Size Big Thinking

3. Small Size Small Thinking

4. Big Size Small Thinking

in which quadrant is your company?
