What if…

Independence day special issue of Outlook carried out stories with a question what if .. particular event would not have happened in History… Here is what I have to say if partition hadn’t happened ….

If partitioned hadn’t happened, or at least Lahore would have been in India, I would have met her online as a compatriot but not as a cross border alien, as might have been perceived by the postman who gave me a wired look and a crooked smile while delivering a mail from across the border. If …then, I would have not lost the shirt in the postal system, shirt which she herself designed and sent me. If …then, going to Lahore would have been as easy as to a district in Punjab; we would not have had to wait for four long years to meet and there would not have been the mad rush to squeeze most out of those 10 days, for it would not have been our only meeting.

If … then, we would not have spent time online in virtual world, but would have hobnobbed and sauntered together in real world and have had much fun together in Delhi. But all this only if …
And there would have been lesser “Frictions”, (lesser because there would have been frictions from religious communities) and she might not have dismissed her feelings of “we being so perfect together” as preposterous, and would not have had to beg me not to fall in love with her and label our relationship with only Best Buddies status.

If … then, I would have got much more hugs … and not just ONE on the last day of my most memorable 10 days!!
But again all this only if partitioned hadn’t happened and we would have been together, things would not have ended up as a mugs game. But …then what if she would not have messaged me?
But rather than pondering over ifs and buts I remember the moment for it happened, for you might not get what you want and desire but you will always get what you need.

Partition was a pain to one and many,
Love had strange ways of expressing itself from seperation to epiphany.
Moments indelible imprinted in our memory,
What if? as rightly said is not the question that one must beg, cherish the moment you live in and YES 3 cheers to democracy!
